Dr. Bret Scher is a board certified cardiologist and lipidologist practicing in San Diego and licensed to practice in seven states. He’s our full-time Medical Director, writes medical blogs, reviews guides and news stories for medical accuracy and hosts The Diet Doctor Podcast.
Dr. Scher’s main focus is on preventing and reversing heart disease naturally rather than putting patients on medication and performing surgery. When he started his own preventative wellness center he was introduced to the whole low-carb world. Being a bit skeptical at first, he was soon convinced by the benefits of a low-carb diet.
In Dr. Scher’s many patients suffering from heart disease, he found that there was a big overlap with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. It was all very interrelated. When he started treating his patients who suffered from heart disease with a low-carb diet, he could quickly see signs of improvements or even full reversal in all of these diseases.
Dr. Scher has also obtained specialized certifications in functional medicine, nutrition, personal training, and behavior modification.
He is also the author of the book Your best health ever!, and he has a blog and website at lowcarbcardiologist.com.

Diagnosed with T1 Diabetes at age 11, Suzanne has lived experience of the challenges of managing chronic health through diet. As a young competitive athlete, she developed a deep awareness of the impact of food on performance and body image. Unfortunately, she was also diagnosed with end-stage renal disease in her early 30’s and it was only after spending 3 years on dialysis, and receiving a double organ transplant, that she started to question the nutrition guidance she had been given.
This led her to study a Master’s (Honours) degree in Nutrition and Behaviour, followed by a research PhD, investigating the impact of the Ketogenic Diet in T1D, and particularly its impact on eating disorder outcomes.

Alison Smart has a teenage daughter who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes almost three years ago. Her family found that lifestyle modifications, dietary changes and a regimen of daily injections utilizing the basal insulin Levemir enabled her daughter to achieve excellent blood glucose results! Alison’s daughter is an athlete who experiences a typical teenage life with little disruption from diabetes.
However, in November of 2023 Novo Nordisk announced Levemir insulin would be discontinued. This announcement came just months after Novo Nordisk announced they would significantly decrease the price of this insulin.
Alison got to work and joined with others who are also incredulous at the thought of being left with only the option of two other basal insulins or an insulin pump. They created the Alliance to Protect Insulin Choice, started a petition on change.org, compiled a YT video of testimonials, and met with several senators and congressional representatives in Washington DC.
They continue to move forward with their goal of pressuring Novo Nordisk to slow down the discontinuation and produce Levemir until a biosimilar basal insulin is available.
