Alison Smart has a teenage daughter who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes almost three years ago. Her family found that lifestyle modifications, dietary changes and a regimen of daily injections utilizing the basal insulin Levemir enabled her daughter to achieve excellent blood glucose results! Alison’s daughter is an athlete who experiences a typical teenage life with little disruption from diabetes.
However, in November of 2023 Novo Nordisk announced Levemir insulin would be discontinued. This announcement came just months after Novo Nordisk announced they would significantly decrease the price of this insulin.
Alison got to work and joined with others who are also incredulous at the thought of being left with only the option of two other basal insulins or an insulin pump. They created the Alliance to Protect Insulin Choice, started a petition on change.org, compiled a YT video of testimonials, and met with several senators and congressional representatives in Washington DC.
They continue to move forward with their goal of pressuring Novo Nordisk to slow down the discontinuation and produce Levemir until a biosimilar basal insulin is available.

In October 2019, I began my keto journey after my blood sugar levels skyrocketed. Desperately seeking help, a friend suggested that I explore Dr. Stephen Phinney's work. After watching his videos, I was convinced that this was the right path to take to improve my health. Over the past three years, I have delved into the science behind keto and learned why it was the best option for me to improve all my metabolic markers, including my A1c, weight, blood pressure, liver enzymes, and kidney levels. As a result, I am now off most medications, including insulin and immune suppressants for my rheumatoid arthritis, and I feel better than I have in decades. I am thoroughly enjoying life again and am determined to never look back.

I lost 120 pounds in 2018 on a Carnivore Diet and maintained that in 2019. In 2020 I struggled with some weight gain and then lost it again in 2021. For the last few years I have been maintaining a stable weight. In December 2022 I had skin removal surgery (tummy tuck). This channel has documented all of that journey and we share how our family lives normal lives and eat a meat based diet.
My husband also has joined me and lost over 100 pounds and eats a carnivore diet. He reversed his type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and more by using carnivore and fasting.

As a specialist in gynecology, gynecologic oncology and breast cancer management including surgery, I support fasting and ketogenic diet approach for a wide range of metabolic health conditions of my patients. For example, a recent review paper I co-authored (https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnut.2020.00021/full) highlights as an emerging evidence that a correct and well-formulated ketogenic metabolic therapy could be helpful as a complementary pre-surgical and post-surgical approach for women with all stages of breast cancer, even metastatic disease. KD reduces glucose availability to cancer cells, systemic inflammation, and, with other biochemical mechanisms, enables the targeting of cancer cells without causing damage to normal cells. A KD may also improve progression-free and overall survival for most breast cancer patients.
