When I was 27, I was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis (an auto immune disease). My immune system would in essence, stop the transmission of nerve impulses to muscles. I had an operation (thymectomy), where my enlarged thymus gland was removed along with a very small benign tumour, and following that the disease was very well managed with medication. I was fit, a workaholic, and always on the go.
Four years ago (37 years) I was 9 months pregnant with my first-birthed baby. Plagued with breathing difficulties and pain throughout the pregnancy, I thought many of my complaints were normal for expectant mothers and that I was just being dramatic! One week away from inducement, it was discovered I had tumours on my heart, lung and chest (the largest measuring over 19cm). I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and palliative chemotherapy was offered with a life expectancy of less than 12 months. We then began the process of seeking out alternative therapies.
Coincidentally, at this same time I had a routine appointment with my neurologist Dr Matthew Phillips for the Myasthenia Gravis and when we talked to him about my cancer diagnosis, he and nutritionist Deborah Murtagh introduced me to the ketogenic diet and fasting.
The next few years were intense. Physical, spiritual and emotional limits were constantly broken. The medication I was on to control the Myasthenia was an immune system suppressant, and now I needed the immune system to fight the cancer. I was walking a fine line and too far either way could kill me (and almost did). We were in new territory and as the ketogenic diet and fasting was so foreign in Western medicine, I was always having to defend myself to practitioners who thought I had an eating disorder. In two and a half years the cancer didn’t grow and I attribute this, mostly to fasting. We are so thankful to Dr Matthew Phillips for being with us on this journey. He has freely and generously given all his knowledge and we are incredibly blessed by his friendship. Continue reading....

Dr. Diana Rancourt received her PhD in clinical psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina under the mentorship of Dr. Mitchell J. Prinstein. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island in pediatric psychology under the mentorship of Dr. Elissa Jelalian.
Dr. Rancourt currently is an Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Training in the Psychology Department at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. Her program of research addresses three broad questions: 1) How do interoception and food craving experiences influence eating behaviors? 2) How do individual and social factors intersect to influence eating behaviors? and 3) To what extent is food and alcohol disturbance (FAD) distinct from disordered eating or problematic alcohol use? Most relevant to this conference, her work demonstrates the importance of hunger and satiety-specific interoception to disordered eating and the utility of a two-dimensional model of food craving to predict different eating patterns. Dr. Rancourt has over 70 peer-reviewed publications and has received research support from the National Institutes of Health and DexCom, Inc.

After years of trialing many different ways of eating to support my own health challenges, I found the ketogenic way of eating a few years ago, and haven't looked back. I love the way my body feels eating this way, and know that others will too. Improvements in energy, sleep, hormones and immune health have been wonderful side benefits from lowering my daily carbohydrate intake. I use a ketogenic way of eating with many clients in my clinic to support blood sugar balance, weight loss, mood stabilisation, to decrease pain levels and for overall good health. I've found it particularly beneficial for conditions like lymphedema and lipedema, which respond beautifully to this way of eating. I regularly refer clients to dietdoctor.com for great recipes and helpful articles to help incorporate ketogenic principles into everyday life.

Doug Reynolds is the Founder and CEO of LowCarbUSA®. The original organization was founded in the beginning of 2016 with the initial intention of providing a platform, through an annual conference, for internationally renowned scientists and medical practitioners to present the ever-increasing body of evidence on the benefits of reducing carbohydrates in the diet (and adding in healthy fats). He felt that education about the power of the low carb/ketogenic diet for the individual who may not get the information from their medical team or from mainstream nutrition advice, and for practitioners who may then be able to prescribe it in their practice was critical.
However, his mission quickly evolved when he realized how important this was to the medical professional community. Valuable tools are needed, not only to provide hope to their patients to reverse and prevent disease but restore hope to that very practitioner. This is why they went to medical school and got professional training, to help people heal and not just put Band-Aids on and never address the root cause of the problem. Too many practitioners are being taught that the many chronic diseases our communities are facing are just chronic and processive. With effective tools and supportive information, complications can be stopped in their tracks and further complications reduced and the disease process may even be reversed....
